MPEG Bidirectional-Frame - B-FrameBidirectional frames (B-Frames) are compressed images (pictures) within a sequence of images (such as in a video sequence) that are created using information from preceding images and images that follow such as from intra frames (I-Frames) and predicted frames (P-Frames). Because B-Frames are created using both preceding images and images that follow, B-frames offer more data compression capability than P-Frames. B-frames require the use of frames that both precede and follow the B-frames. Because B frames must be compared to two other frames, the amount of image processing that is required for B-frames (e.g. motion estimation) is typically higher than P frames. This figure shows how bidirectional frames (B-Frames) are used in a group of pictures (GOP). This example shows that each B-frame contains is created using relative information from frames before and a after its frame period. Because the relative information can be removed, this reduces the number of bytes to represent the image (from 300 kB to approximately 30 kB in this example). MPEG B-Frame Diagram
