Intra Frame - I-Frame
An intra-frame is an image in a motion video sequence that is independently coded and has no reference to any other frames. In MPEG other video codec such as H.263 and H.264, I-frames are encoded in a way similar to JPEG for still images. MPEG Intra-Frame I-Frame
This figure shows how Intra frames (I-Frames) are used in a group of pictures (GOP) as reference frames (key frames). This example shows that each I- frame contains a complete image which can be reference by other frames within the GOP.
